Local Website Solutions

Folks have been asking me how they can get communities involved in their local web projects. The main problem is making tools easy enough for non-technical types to use, and integrating it into part of their daily life. DozingDogs is one application that I have had the pleasure to use personally:

Where it is used:
Dozing Dogs was formed to leverage the 2 years development of the OurLittleNet web sites, at it's peak serving over 5 million pages each month from a single application. Here's some history..

I formed OurLittleNet,Inc back in 2001 to develop a network of small city web sites where local residents and organizations such as schools and churches could sign up and freely create content.

A local Editor runs each site as a volunteer and oversees the content being created and promotes the site as much as they are able.

In August 2004 I decided to leverage the development work in the site by making it a product that could be used for any size web site - after all, we have many thousands of pages in our network now, and over 3,000 members!

The Dozing Dogs CMS is the result of a hard 3 months work making it into the first release. Most of that went into removing the hard-coded "OurLittleNet-ness" of the site, and making everything (including the site design) easily configurable.

More on OurLittleNet here.

About the Software:
All of my web sites created since 2002 are running on the Dozing Dogs CMS. OurLittleNet is of course the most famous, with 1,644 small city web sites around the United States (read our history).

I'll show you how you can experiment with the live system in a moment, but first, here are a few simple examples of what lies at the core of our Content Management System.

All content, including the elements of your site design itself, can quickly and easily be edited online if you are signed in with sufficient privileges. Below is an example of what I mean - a section of the front page of this web site as you see it (on the left) and as I see it ...

See some examples here.

I'll provide information on more solutions I have tested out soon.
