Adrian Porter at netimperative.com. (via LucDesk) Web sites need to be designed. All too often web sites are in the hands of techies who neither care for, nor understand the value of good design. This is not to decry techies - but the web does not belong to them. ... Good design, well engineered, makes a site feel welcoming. It makes a site easy to get around. It makes it a pleasurable experience, a quick one - and an easy one. Good design puts on visitors - and keeps them.
All too often, no-one is really in charge of Web development. The CEO tells IT to get on with it. Then marketing kicks up a fuss, because its all spinning globes and Flash movies and no-one can find anything on it. Then corporate affairs says it doesn't reflect the brand values of the organisation. Then the finance director chips in that investor relations are woefully catered for - and so on.
Web sites need a chief.
Someone who understands the marriage of function, technology and design that is involved in their creation. Someone who can keep the balance in that three-ring circus. And someone who can claim the slice or corporate budget required to meet the ambitions of the company.
